The Importance Of A Flexible IT Strategy

By Sasha Halloway

In this age and era of technology, organizations embrace the role of IT in the management of their operations. However, in order for IT professionals to correctly provide the required support, they need to have an IT strategy. In the next section, we look at how this critical strategy/plan should be made so that it works to serve its purpose.

By definition, a strategy is a broad plan and so a strategy for information technology is a broad plan that directs an organization towards realization of its goals and objectives. The plan is actually broad as it encompasses most aspects of the organization. The plan directs how the organization conducts its business and this is why it should be as broad as possible.

Even so, the strategy can only be executed with the help of and direction of experienced and well knowledgeable IT professionals. These professionals work hand in hand with other key strategist within the organization. These include business department professionals, legal department professionals, budget department professionals and other user groups.

A good plan should address cost management, risk management, management of suppliers, hardware and software management and human capital management. It should be formal. Formal plans are easier to adopt and implement as opposed to informal plans. To effectively implement the plan, ensure to have it written down.

However, it is important to remember that a great plan is one that is flexible. Flexibility may be handy especially since the circumstances of an organization are bound to change from time to time and the flexible plan would allow for changes. Flexibility may also come in handy where there are budgetary constraints and so adjustments and changes are necessitated. Still, new technology can emerge and so there would be need for flexibility to change.

The experts will advise that the extensive plan be tailored to meet the skills that are available in the company. Again, here the plan would really work if it is not as rigid because skills within an organization are also bound to change. So it is very important that this is factored while drawing the extensive plan.

Time also brings better understanding to user needs and business objectives. As such, a plan like this may need to be adjusted to match this new understanding. This can only be where the strategy is flexible to allow changes. The idea is that business priorities should always be the prime concern when setting up the plan.

You will be happy to know that a good IT strategy will open many doors for your organization. It will automate the processes and improve the efficiency. Workers will work better where they can run reports fast, generate queries, track projects and monitor their finances. That not withstanding, you should ensure that you get experts to put together the plan for you so that you also get to share the above mentioned benefits.
