MWD which means Measurement While Drilling is measurements taken by drilling companies when the well is drilled at an angle with respect to the vertical line. MWD drilling software is used to take these measurements and analyze them. This crucial data in transmitted during operations to the surface where it is used to produce a path of the oil well in three dimensions.
There are different types of information transmitted by the software one being the direction of the well. Real time directional surveys and its transmission are very possible. Measurement of the azimuth and the inclination of the hole at that location are done by the magnetometers and accelerometers. There is therefore real time transmission from the site to the surface.
Analysis of data is done on the surface before calculation of the location of the wellbore after data transmission which takes data from 10m to 500m in intervals. This information is as crucial as it being prove enough that the company is not doing any operation outside its permitted site or circumference. It may not be used when creating vertical holes or near vertical direction because it is quite expensive.
The surveys is mainly used in directional-drilling. Directional-drilling forms the main or core part of any survey. Finding and moving towards the target zone of the well will be made easier by this information. Directional-drilling is aided by MWD by the provision of tool face measurements which uses downhole mud motors with bent housing or bent.
The software sends information about the mechanics of the drill bit. This kind of information include the downhole temperature, mud flow volume, smoothness of rotation, the drillstring speed of rotation, the weight as well as torque on the dril bit. This info will lead to more efficient operations. It also ensures that the tools used won't fail when drilling because they can be operated within their technical specifications. Geologists use this information to understand the formation of the zone being drilled.
MWD tools are capable of measuring the formation properties and send the data to drillers when drilling is ongoing. They use this information to perform geosteering to the target zone. The information varies from porosity, inclination at the bit, acoustic-caliper, density, and resistivity.
There is also the measurement of natural gamma rays measurements at the well using internal gamma ray sensor installed in MWD tools. The sensors cost a lot, are compact and able to take measurements when drilling unmodified drill collars. Compacts and cheap sensors will do unmodified drill collars during operations. MWD software cuts the various process costs and increases the lifespan of the drill bits.
Mud-pulse telemetry method or electromagnetic telemetry are the two methods used to transmit data from the drill bit. The mud valve downhole gives the information in the mud-pulse method, by creating pressure differences when restricting mud flows. The pulse can either be continuous wave, positive or negative pulse.
In electromagnetic telemetry method by the MWD software, altered voltage is generated in the upper and lower part of the electrical insulator then incorporated in the drillstring. There is a wire from both thewellhead on the surface and the rod which form the electrodes of a dipole antenna. These electrodes provide information from analysis of the voltage signals.
