Game Design & 3 Tips To Help Students

By Robert Sutter

When it comes to the most prominent art forms in this day and age, attention has to be given to game design. It is important to note that gaming, as one of the greatest hobbies that people can get lost in, requires a tremendous amount of effort and designers are needed in order to carry out the effort in question. With this in mind, what should design students remember as they go about any given project? These are 3 tips that any student should keep in mind.

1. Make it a point to stand out from the crowd. This point is especially important when given the fact that certain franchises like Call of Duty are yearly and, as a result, prominent in the gaming industry. While it might seem appealing to mimic what is most popular, the problem is that your project can stand the risk of being deemed a carbon copy and nothing more. If you have a creative idea that may not be familiar in mainstream gaming, do not be afraid to work off of the idea in question.

2. Understand science in addition to art. As stated before, game design is - more or less - an art form and what this means is that creativity should remain at the forefront. This does not mean, though, that it should be the only element and science is perhaps one of the more crucial subjects tied into this industry. Computer knowledge is integral, whether you are talking about polygons or general coding. Those who understand game design are multi-faceted as far as their interests in school are concerned.

3. Staying up-to-date with developing trends in the gaming industry should not go overlooked. This is especially true when the video game business is, for the most part, a rapidly-changing field. Sometimes a story may go unnoticed but you have to make it a point to read up and understand the developments that you, as a student, can make use of in the future. The more that you pick up on in the media, the better of a career you will have once you graduate.

These points are just a few to keep in mind if you want to make the most out of game design. To say that there is a tremendous degree of work that is associated with game design perhaps goes without saying but I do not think that this should turn anyone away from this particular endeavor. In fact, I am of the opinion that most of these students have potential because they have a lifelong appreciation for gaming. In time, as long as they put in the work, students can excel in the gaming industry.
