The Usefulness Of PRN Software

By Carmella Watts

For reading and using files with printing instructions, the use of PRN software can be the best approach. Usually, an automated process creates the documents, for the purpose of transforming word processor files into commands. PRN can have great practical applications. The code is made using specific programming languages.

The commands included in a file can control the content of pages and they can be sent to a printing device. Paper type, dimensions and other important components can be comprehended and used by a machine. Usually, the files are hidden to the user, because of their intermediary nature. When pages are generated, you may just have to require access to the functions of the involved word processor or application for completion.

There are cases in which a file can be useful alone, because you can use it to print documents without accessing the word processor or the application in which it was initially created. The utility of PRN can be seen if you run a print shop and you provide paperwork just by using the intermediary file that contains the instructions. Managing the documents can be easier with special software.

There are two primary formats to use, but also a few secondary ones and they can work well with inkjet printers. The main designs are PostScript and PCL. The first format uses a page description language that was made in 1984 by Adobe. The platform can be used best for high volume systems and it has a versatile programming language. You can simply convert the files into PDF and use GhostScript to view them.

In the same year, 1984, Hewlett Packard created PCL, which means Printer Command Language. Being less complex than PostScript, the language has fewer options, but more performance. An improvement was made later to the system, for having a similar functionality to the solution from Adobe. The two platforms can be great for all office environments and are easily recognizable by PRN software now.

PRN uses multiple formats today and it can work on the majority of printer types, such as classical dot matrix platforms and low volume inkjet systems. For creating a file, you could use the printing dialog that appears when you use the options of a word processor. If you do not have the functionality in your application, you could get software that supports it. In general, the PRN format is made by the driver of your printer, when you try to put the work on paper.

A text file with the project script is created with the PRN file. The file could be deposited on a local hard drive until it is time to use it. You can see text and junk characters if you try to open the document in an editor. You can use particular software for reading the whole text.

PRN software can help you a lot in many situations. A good example of program usefulness can be when your printer stops working and you need to save the intermediary file and future use and reading. The first types of files than people should use may be PCL and PostScript, as they can be good for any device. For an improved work management, PRN software can offer a lot of functions, like viewing a script or even converting it.
